The metals used for producing cake tins are limited, however, because the material must not react chemically with other substances when heated. Cake tins already existed in the 17th century. Prior to that period, most pans and pots used for baking and cooking were made from clay or stone. Even after metal cookware was developed, some people remained using pottery cookware, because metal ones were more expensive.
